Licean athlete strikes double gold, bronze in 10th MBC Int’l Taekwondo Championships
Licean
pride soared to the international stage as Julia Kris Oñate, a Grade 11
Humanities and Social Sciences 1 student of Liceo de Cagayan University Senior
High School, represented the Philippines in the 10th MBC International Open
Taekwondo Championships held in Gyeryong, Korea, from August 7–11, 2025.
Competing
alongside other delegates from Cagayan de Oro City, Oñate delivered an
outstanding performance, winning Gold in Trio Kyorugi, Gold in Team Poomsae,
and Bronze in Kyorugi (A-League) against top contenders from various countries.
Her
latest feat follows a string of remarkable achievements, including her gold
medal victory in the featherweight category at the Palarong Pambansa 2025.
These accomplishments have solidified her reputation as one of the city’s most
promising taekwondo athletes.
In
an interview, she shared her heartfelt gratitude to those who made her
international debut possible.
“As
an athlete, I couldn’t imagine competing internationally because we couldn’t
afford to go. But thanks to my skills and the generosity of kind sponsors, I
was able to make it here. I am very thankful to everyone who supported
me," she said.
Oñate’s
success in Korea not only brings honor to Liceo de Cagayan University but also
serves as an inspiration for young athletes to dream big and persevere despite
challenges.
