Philippine-German Friendship Day 2025: A Creative Celebration of Cultural Unity

SDG 4 SDG 17

On October 3, 2025, the Liceo de Cagayan University Junior High School (LDCU-JHS) marked the Philippine-German Friendship Day with a vibrant cultural exhibit and program held at the Rodolfo N. Pelaez (RNP) Campus. The celebration filled the school with color, creativity, and collaboration, showcasing how art and learning can serve as bridges of friendship between the Philippines and Germany.

At the heart of the event was a cultural exhibit that transformed the campus lobby into a space of creativity, discovery, and cultural connection. Each display reflected the imagination and hard work of the Grade 10 students, who used their artistic skills to portray the values of cooperation, respect, and shared heritage. From detailed models to expressive visual presentations, the exhibits demonstrated how young learners can foster intercultural understanding through creativity. Every project stood as a testament to the students’ curiosity, teamwork, and appreciation of both Filipino and German cultures.

The celebration continued with the main program at the Audio-Visual Room (AVR), where students, faculty, and guests gathered to honor the enduring ties between the two nations. The program opened with a message from Dr. Maricor L. Lamberte, JHS Principal, who commended the students’ artistry and the depth of meaning behind their creative works. The event also featured testimonies from PASCH scholars — Samantha Marie T. Calagsing, Jaden William U. Tiu, and Jeric Russel R. Dano — along with cultural intermissions and a video presentation highlighting the school’s commitment to global learning and intercultural engagement. Inspirational messages from Dr. Teresita T. Tumapon and Ms. Barbara Pauli of the Goethe-Institut Philippinen underscored the significance of education and cultural exchange in strengthening international friendship.

The event was organized by Mrs. Jasmin C. Lagumbay and Ms. Anjenet G. Labor, German Language teachers of the Junior High School Department, with the support of the Deutscher Verein and the Languages teachers. It was made possible through the collaboration of the Office of International Relations and Linkages (OIRL), headed by Dr. Ma. Chona V. Palomares, whose guidance and partnership reinforced the event’s purpose of promoting international understanding. Through programs like this, Liceo de Cagayan University continues to empower students to become global learners — individuals who celebrate diversity, practice respect, and embrace cooperation.

The 2025 Philippine-German Friendship Day was more than a commemoration; it was a living expression of unity through learning. Both the exhibit and the program reminded everyone that friendship among nations thrives through shared experiences, mutual respect, and creativity. The students of LDCU-JHS did not merely participate in a school event; they emerged as young ambassadors of peace and understanding, using imagination and collaboration to celebrate the deep and lasting connection between the Philippines and Germany. Their creativity proved that when learning meets purpose, it can build bridges that connect not only classrooms but also hearts across the world.

LICEO U OPENS ITS 68TH FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Today marks a momentous event for Liceo de Cagayan University – its 68th Founding Anniversary. It was on this day in 1955 when the visionary couple, Atty. Rodolfo and Elsa Pelaez, founded the Liceo de Cagayan. With great love for Cagayan de Oro and for the nation and with deep passion for education, Rodelsa and Elsa braved those trying years of the new republic by establishing a collegiate school, which became a full university in the late 1990s. With a very long history of quality education in various program offerings evidenced by numerous recognitions and distinctions earned, Liceo U has become one of the earliest, most enduring, and most respected higher learning institutions in Mindanao. Liceo de Cagayan University is indeed the founders’ great legacy to the community and the nation – a legacy that Liceans now celebrate with festivities.

The celebration was formally opened early today with a Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Bobit Laroga, SSS at the Liceo Civic Center. Following the Mass was the laying of wreath before the founders’ life-sized monument laid at the iconic Rodelsa Hall. Chair of the Board Dr. Rafaelita Pelaez Pelaez and University President Dr. Alain Marc P. Golez led the wreath-laying rites. In attendance were the University’s top officials, the heads of all academic and non-academic departments, the faculty and staff, and the students.

In his message during the opening salvo at the Civic Center that featured several live performances and the candidates of the Liceo Student Ambassadors 2023, the University President expounded the celebration’s theme “Thrive. Triumph. Transcend.” saying,

“To thrive means to grow, to prosper, to reach our full potential. It is a fitting theme for our anniversary as we reflect on the many ways that Liceo de Cagayan University has flourished over the years. Our academic programs have expanded, our facilities have improved, and our reputation for excellence has spread far and wide. But even as we celebrate our success, we know that there’s always more we can do, more we can achieve.

To triumph means to overcome obstacles, to persevere in the face of adversity, to immerge victorious. It is a testament to the resilience of our community that we have weathered so many challenges over the years from natural disasters to global pandemic. But through It all, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to education, to service, and to each other. And we will continue to triumph in the face of whatever challenges lie ahead.

To transcend means to go beyond, to rise above, to reach new heights. It is a call to action, a challenge to strive for excellence in all that we do. We must push ourselves to be better, to learn more, to serve more, to make a greater impact on the world. And we must do so, not just for our own benefit, but for the benefit of all those around us, for our community, for our nation, for the world.”

>On a final note, Dr. Golez urged the Licean community to look to the past, present, and future as he remarked: “…let us look to the past, to our founders Atty. Rodolfo and Elsa Pelaez, to the present with determination, and to the future with hope. Let us continue to thrive, to triumph, and to transcend, building on the legacy of those who have come before us and paving the way for those who will follow.”

Academic and non-academic events highlight the celebration of the 68th Founding Anniversary. These events include RODELSA Lecture Series, Atty. Rodolfo N. Pelaez Debate Tournament, Intraschool Oratorical Contest, Research Colloquium, The La Castilla Blue and White Ware: A Photography Exhibition (Ayala Mall), Opera Bonanza featuring CDO Symphony Orchestra, 17th Cultural Season (arts festival), Service Awards 2023, H.E.L.P.S (outreach program), Liceo Student Ambassadors Coronation Night, Rise Up: A Variety Concert, Employees’ Day, and REGRESSO 2023 (grand alumni homecoming), among others.

Liceo U Political Science Students Partner with YACAP on 'The Earth Is On Fire' Webinar to Champion

SDG 13 SDG 16

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Liceo de Cagayan University’s commitment to global action was evident as the Association of Political Science Students (APSS), the official student arm of the College of Arts and Sciences, successfully collaborated with the Youth Advocate for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP) Mindanao Chapter to conduct the impactful webinar, 'The Earth is On Fire.'

Held via Zoom on January 27, 2023, the event utilized a crucial joint effort: APSS and YACAP collaborated on a pre-webinar study to gather and analyze local data on climate change awareness and vulnerabilities in the community. This collaborative research effort formed the foundation of the webinar's content and fulfilled the requirement for a joint research programme with an NGO.

The webinar, featuring guest speakers Ms. Rachelle Junsay (YACAP-NCR) and Patricia Gabisay (YACAP-Mindanao), emphasized that #ClimateJusticeisSocialJustice. This strategic collaboration with YACAP, a verified non-government organization (NGO), directly addresses Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) and supports the university’s mission to promote social awareness through evidence-based advocacy.

Through this initiative, Liceo U demonstrates its institutional support for student-led engagements that foster a greener and more sustainable environment for all, actively contributing to the development of climate-resilient communities.
