CPH Culmination Program with Free Health Services and Health Teaching in Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City
Liceo de Cagayan University – College of Medical Laboratory Science | Community and Public Health Program, December 2 & 9, 2023
Liceo de Cagayan University’s College of Medical Laboratory Science, through its Community and Public Health Program, conducted a two-phase outreach initiative in Barangay Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City, in collaboration with the Department of Health – Northern Mindanao and Barangay Macasandig officials. The program aimed to promote preventive healthcare, enhance community awareness, and strengthen partnerships between the university, government agencies, and the local community.
A week before the culmination, students carried out a household needs assessment with selected residents to identify common health issues, lifestyle patterns, and access barriers to medical services. Findings revealed the need for health education on nutrition, hygiene, and blood pressure management. Guided by these results, the culmination program provided free health screenings, vaccinations, and educational sessions focused on disease prevention and wellness promotion.
The two-day event featured free blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol and blood sugar testing, blood typing, and flu vaccinations in partnership with DOH Region X. Vitamins and health kits were distributed, while students facilitated health teaching sessions on nutrition, hygiene, and preventive health practices. The initiative emphasized the importance of proactive healthcare and community engagement in achieving lasting well-being.
“After the students visited our homes and taught us about healthy food and exercise, I became more aware of checking my blood pressure regularly,” shared one Barangay Macasandig resident during the culmination program.
The initiative advances SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, particularly Target 3.3 (ending epidemics and reducing illnesses through prevention and treatment) and Target 3.8 (achieving universal health coverage and access to quality healthcare services). By combining research, outreach, and collaboration, the program demonstrated an evidence-based and participatory approach to community health education.
