Progressing for a Great Rehabilitation Future: Liceo U’s CRS Partners with West City Central School

In pursuit of inclusive education and community health, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) of Liceo de Cagayan University formalized a partnership with West City Central School for the delivery of Occupational and Physical Rehabilitation Services to children with special needs.

Held on February 2, 2024, at West City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City, the initiative titled “Progressing for a Great Rehabilitation Future!” established a community-based rehabilitation program that integrates therapy services into the public-school system. Recognizing the need for accessible therapeutic care and inclusive education, the program provides regular assessment, evaluation, and treatment sessions for children with disabilities. Guided by CRS faculty, seventeen Physical and Occupational Therapy students conduct supervised interventions and educational workshops for teachers, parents, and caregivers, helping them better support the developmental and physical needs of learners.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two institutions, signed by Mr. Dionesio A. Pongo Jr., PTRP, of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and Mr. Jerry P. Taruc of West City Central School, ensures the partnership’s continuity and sustainability. “This partnership brings rehabilitation closer to children who need it most,” shared a West City Central School teacher. “It strengthens our capacity to provide inclusive and compassionate learning for every child.”

Since its implementation, seventy-one children have been assessed and enrolled in ongoing rehabilitation programs. Beyond therapy, the collaboration strengthens inter-institutional cooperation and enhances the professional competencies of Liceo U rehabilitation students through real-world, community-based experience. Operating under a continuing MOA, the initiative is envisioned to expand to nearby schools, creating an inter-school rehabilitation network to advance inclusive education and accessible healthcare for all. By promoting physical and mental well-being, expanding access to quality education, and reducing barriers for children with disabilities, the initiative contributes directly to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

By the Numbers:
• 71 children assessed and served
• 17 Liceo U student practitioners engaged
• 6 CRS faculty supervisors
