NSTP Lecture Series on Environmental Education


Liceo de Cagayan University, through its National Service Training Program (NSTP) Department, conducted the Lecture Series on Environmental Education and Community Development on December 3, 2023, at the Liceo Civic Center. The initiative was part of the University’s continuing efforts to raise environmental awareness, cultivate climate leadership among students, and strengthen community participation in sustainable development.

The activity featured lectures and interactive discussions led by faculty members and environmental advocates, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship, waste management, and climate resilience. Students were encouraged to reflect on their role as young citizens capable of leading local sustainability projects and advocating for ecological responsibility.

This initiative reaffirmed Liceo U’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action, which calls for urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts. It also supports SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly through the integration of sustainability and civic responsibility into academic and service-learning programs.

One NSTP participant shared, “The lecture made me realize that climate action starts with us. Liceo U Leads Clean-Up Drive to Protect Cagayan de Oro River with Community Partners


On November 25, 2023, the Safer River Life Saver Foundation, Inc. (SRLSFI)—the foundation arm of Liceo de Cagayan University—led a Clean-Up Drive at Isla Delta, Barangay Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro City, in collaboration with the Samdhana Institute, BLGU Consolacion, the Solo Parents Group, and the Safer River Club (SRC).

This initiative aimed to restore and preserve the natural integrity of the Cagayan de Oro River, one of the city’s vital ecosystems increasingly affected by pollution and climate-related risks. Volunteers from partner organizations and the local community joined forces to collect, segregate, and properly dispose of accumulated waste along the riverbanks—transforming a single morning’s effort into a movement for sustainable environmental care.

More than just a clean-up, the activity served as an avenue for environmental education and collective empowerment. Participants were encouraged to recognize the link between local environmental action and global climate solutions, fostering a deeper sense of stewardship within the community.

A Solo Parent volunteer shared, “Being part of this clean-up made me realize that even small actions can make a big difference. This river is part of our home, and keeping it clean is everyone’s responsibility.”

CLIMATE ACTION PLAN


Green Heal Initiative: Herbal Planting and Community Awareness for a Healthier and Greener Consolacion


Liceo de Cagayan University, through its National Service Training Program (NSTP) under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, continues to advance environmental sustainability and community wellness through the Green Heal Initiative—a collaborative project promoting herbal gardening and environmental awareness in Barangay Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro City.

Conducted on May 5, 2024, the initiative brought together NSTP BSPH 1A students, the Safer River Life Saver Foundation Inc., and the Barangay Local Government Unit of Consolacion in a shared effort to encourage sustainable living and climate-conscious practices.

Through a community seminar and herbal planting activity, participants learned about the environmental and health benefits of cultivating medicinal plants such as oregano, lagundi, and lemongrass. The activity aimed not only to revive traditional herbal knowledge but also to strengthen community resilience against the impacts of climate change.

A local participant shared, “Planting herbs may seem small, but it gives us something to care for and something to rely on when we need natural remedies. It also makes our surroundings greener and cooler.”

The program demonstrated how education and environmental advocacy can intersect to empower local communities. By integrating climate awareness, health promotion, and hands-on engagement, the Green Heal Initiative embodies Liceo U’s mission to produce socially responsible citizens who act as catalysts for sustainable change.

Liceo de Cagayan University reaffirmed its commitment to climate action and research excellence through the Annual Inter-Collegiate Research Colloquium 2024, held on April 12, 2024, at the East Academic Cluster, Audio Visual Room 3, Main Campus. Organized by the Offices of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Research, Publication, and Innovation, the event served as a platform for students to present groundbreaking studies addressing climate and environmental challenges.

In partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region X, the colloquium highlighted the critical role of academic research in developing science-based, community-responsive solutions to environmental issues. Student researchers showcased innovative projects focused on climate resilience, sustainability, and environmental management, with the winning study centering on soil quality analysis for eco-park rehabilitation—a practical and impactful approach to environmental restoration.

One of the student researchers remarked, “Turning a former dumpsite into an eco park proves that research can spark environmental transformation.” This statement reflects the spirit of the initiative: using education and scientific inquiry as instruments of real-world change. The activity featured research presentations, poster exhibitions, and expert panel discussions that encouraged collaboration between students, faculty, and government representatives. DOST Region X provided technical insights and feedback, enhancing the academic rigor and applied potential of the participating studies.

Liceo U NSTP Joins XU Law Students in Environmental River Management Seminar for a Sustainable Mambuaya River


Liceo de Cagayan University continues to advance its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action through education and community partnership. On April 29, 2024, NSTP students from Liceo U joined Xavier University – College of Law students and the Safer River Life Saver Foundation Inc. in an Environmental River Management Seminar held at Aura, Barangay Mambuaya, Cagayan de Oro City.

The seminar, themed “Together for a Sustainable River,” focused on empowering communities to actively engage in river preservation and sustainable water management. This joint initiative underscores the vital role of youth and local communities in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action, particularly in enhancing climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

Through discussions led by representatives from Xavier University College of Law and Safer River Life Saver Foundation, participants explored the intersection of environmental policy, community participation, and river ecosystem protection. The sessions emphasized that climate action begins at the local level—where informed citizens can drive meaningful change.

NSTP students of Liceo U, together with the Safer River Club (SRC) Mambuaya, actively engaged in workshops and group discussions centered on river rehabilitation, proper waste management, and community-led environmental monitoring. The collaboration highlighted a multidisciplinary approach—merging legal education, environmental science, and community engagement to address local sustainability challenges.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Basic Life Support Lecture Series


On November 27, 2023, the National Service Training Program (NSTP) of Liceo de Cagayan University held the second installment of its Sunday Lecture Series titled “Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) and Basic Life Support (BLS)” at the Liceo Civic Center. With the theme “Ligtas at Lamang ang May Alam!” the session focused on equipping students with life-saving knowledge and practical skills to enhance readiness and resilience in times of emergencies.

The lecture, led by guest speaker Mr. Ian Jose Baang, RN, MGM, emphasized the vital importance of cultivating awareness and preparedness among students at an early stage. Through demonstrations and discussions, participants learned the essential components of DRRM and BLS, including first aid response, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and emergency management principles.

By promoting disaster preparedness and health literacy, the initiative fostered a culture of safety and proactive community engagement. It empowered students to respond effectively during crises, reinforcing the role of education in building a safer, more resilient society.

Heat Wave Awareness Seminar: “Protecting Communities During Heat Waves, Stay Informed, Stay Safe”


On May 5, 2024, the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students of Liceo de Cagayan University, in collaboration with Safer River, Life Saver, and the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Barangay Kauswagan, conducted a Community Extension Seminar on Heat Wave Awareness at Barangay Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City.

With the theme “Protecting Communities During Heat Waves, Stay Informed, Stay Safe,” the seminar aimed to raise awareness on the health risks of extreme heat and educate residents on practical measures for safety and prevention. A total of 50 community participants attended the session, which featured informative discussions and interactive demonstrations led by NSTP student facilitators and barangay health partners.

The activity emphasized the importance of preparedness during extreme weather conditions, highlighting simple yet critical actions such as hydration, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and recognizing early symptoms of heat-related illnesses. By engaging residents through educational outreach, the program contributed to building community resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related health impacts. “Through this seminar, I learned how to keep my family safe during very hot days,” shared one participant, reflecting the practical impact of the session on household preparedness and community safety.

National Recognition for Excellence in Community Engagement


Championing its mission of service and social transformation, Liceo de Cagayan University was formally recognized by the Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementors, Inc. (PAEPI) as an Institutional Member, affirming the University’s excellence in community engagement and sustained contribution to national development through extension services.

The recognition was awarded during the OESL Capacity Development Training held on November 17, 2023, at Audio-Visual Room 1, Liceo U Main Campus. Receiving the Certificate of Institutional Membership from Dr. Ma. Teresa Fajardo, President of PAEPI-Region X, were Dr. Ma. Florecilla C. Cinches, Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Innovation, and Mr. Salm Kairo C. Dumanlag, Director for Extension and Service-Learning.

Since 2008, Liceo U has been an active participant in PAEPI’s network of academic institutions dedicated to strengthening the implementation and impact of extension programs across the country. Through this partnership, the University continues to uphold its vision of empowering communities and fostering meaningful collaboration between academia and society.

Seventeen Licean personnel were also inducted as new members of PAEPI, with their membership sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Innovation (OVP-REPI) and the Office of Extension and Service-Learning (OESL)—a testament to Liceo U’s commitment to cultivating leaders who embody compassion, competence, and community engagement.

On March 23, 2024, the Natural Sciences Department of Liceo de Cagayan University, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region X, led a Coastal Clean-Up Drive at Opol Beach, Misamis Oriental in celebration of World Water Day. The activity brought together Liceo U students, faculty, and DENR personnel in a collaborative effort to promote environmental stewardship, water conservation, and community engagement.

The clean-up drive addressed the urgent challenges facing coastal areas, including pollution, habitat degradation, and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. On May 10, 2024, Liceo de Cagayan University, through its Safer River Life Saver Foundation Inc. (SRLSFI), actively participated in a Simultaneous Coastal Clean-Up held along Coastal Road, Barangay Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City. The activity was organized in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10, the local government unit of Cagayan de Oro, and the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Office, in celebration of the Month of the Ocean 2024 with the theme “Develop a Sustainable and Equitable Blue Economy.”

The initiative addressed the pressing problem of marine litter and pollution, which threaten coastal biodiversity, local livelihoods, and climate resilience. By engaging students, community volunteers, and government agencies, the clean-up promoted SDG 13: Climate Action, fostering environmental stewardship and strengthening community participation in sustainable practices.

Volunteers, including Liceo U students and faculty, SRLSFI members, and community partners, mobilized early in the morning to collect non-biodegradable waste such as plastics, bottles, and other debris. On August 11, 2023, Liceo de Cagayan University spearheaded the International Youth Day 2023 Tree Growing Activity at the Initao-Libertad Protected Landscape and Seascape in Misamis Oriental. Conducted in partnership with PENRO Misamis Oriental, the initiative brought together student volunteers, youth leaders, and environmental advocates to promote climate action through hands-on reforestation and community engagement.

The activity addressed the urgent need for climate-conscious practices, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem restoration in the face of increasing climate risks. Liceo U, Safer River Foundation Lead Community Tree Planting Drive to Promote Climate Action in Bayabas


Liceo de Cagayan University, through its Safer River Life Saver Foundation Inc. (SRLSFI), spearheaded a Tree Planting Drive at BLGU Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro City on June 29, 2024, in partnership with COCPO, TFQ KABABAYEN AN, and the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC). The activity aimed to enhance green cover, raise environmental awareness, and foster a culture of climate responsibility within the community.

Volunteers, partner organizations, and local residents gathered early in the morning for the planting activity. Participants received guidance on seedling handling, site preparation, and the ecological benefits of tree planting, emphasizing species that support biodiversity and flood mitigation. Representatives from Liceo U and partner agencies shared messages on shared responsibility in protecting natural resources, while local leaders assisted with logistics and community coordination.

The initiative directly contributes to SDG 13: Climate Action by increasing vegetation that absorbs carbon dioxide, stabilizes soil, and supports ecosystem-based approaches to climate resilience. The program also exemplified multi-sector collaboration, uniting educational institutions, civic groups, and community members in practical climate action.

Sustainability is ensured through barangay-led monitoring and maintenance programs in coordination with Liceo U and partner organizations, securing long-term growth and survival of the planted trees.

A community participant shared, “Every tree we plant today is a promise to future generations—a living legacy of our shared commitment to protect the Earth.” Their statement underscores the program’s success in empowering individuals to take meaningful environmental action. The Tree Planting Drive at BLGU Bayabas highlights the impact of collective effort in creating greener, safer, and more resilient communities.
