Community-Based Rehabilitation: Empowering Barangay Health Workers Through Service and Learning

On May 7, 2024, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences of Liceo de Cagayan University held the Culmination Program of the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) at the Barangay Macasandig Covered Court Gym. With the theme “Pagdugang sa Kaalam Para sa Serbisyo sa Katawhan” (Enhancing Knowledge for Community Service), the event gathered barangay health officials and third-year students of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy in a shared commitment to strengthen grassroots rehabilitation services.

The program featured interactive CBR workshops and demonstrations focused on essential rehabilitation techniques such as bed mobility, transfer training, and gait training. These sessions aimed to improve the capacity of barangay health officials to deliver effective care to individuals with mobility impairments and chronic health conditions. Health talks on stroke, arthritis, and diabetes management complemented the training, emphasizing preventive healthcare and community education.

“Our students learn best when they serve,” said a faculty coordinator from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences. “This initiative bridges classroom learning with real-world impact, empowering future therapists to become advocates of inclusive and community-centered healthcare.”

Through this collaboration, the University continues to advance its mission of extending health education and services beyond campus walls—ensuring that learning translates into action that benefits local communities.

This initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by promoting accessible rehabilitation and preventive healthcare at the community level. It also supports SDG 4: Quality Education, through experiential and service-based learning, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through cooperation with local government and health units.

STE Conducts Tutorial at Gugma sa Kabataan

For more than a decade, the School of Teacher Education (STE) of Liceo de Cagayan University has sustained its “Gugma sa Kabataan” Tutorial Program, a long-running community outreach initiative that exemplifies the University’s commitment to compassionate teaching and lifelong learning.

The program provides tutorial sessions for children under the Gugma sa Kabataan Foundation, focusing on the holistic development of learners—academically, physically, emotionally, and socially. STE student-tutors conduct interactive lessons in reading, writing, and mathematics, integrating creative methods such as storytelling, songs, and games to make learning engaging and meaningful.

Beyond academic enrichment, the sessions include physical activities and play-based exercises that promote teamwork, discipline, and self-expression. These activities not only support child development but also create a joyful and safe learning environment where every child can learn with confidence and enthusiasm.

“Teaching is not just about lessons and grades—it’s about helping children grow into confident, kind, and capable individuals,” shared one STE student-tutor. “Through Gugma sa Kabataan, we learn to teach with both skill and heart.”

For the STE students, the tutorial program serves as a practical application of their education coursework, allowing them to experience real-world teaching while developing empathy, creativity, and leadership—qualities essential to becoming transformative educators.

This initiative advances Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive, equitable, and holistic learning opportunities for children. It also supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by encouraging active and positive lifestyles through play and movement, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through its ongoing collaboration with community organizations.
