Clinical Internship Program at Northern Mindanao Medical Center

Since 2012, the College of Medical Laboratory Science (CMLS) of Liceo de Cagayan University has partnered with the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) to implement a year-long Clinical Internship Program that bridges academic instruction with real-world healthcare practice. The partnership ensures that Medical Laboratory Science interns gain professional competencies in a hospital setting while upholding ethical and service-oriented values.

Interns are assigned to five key laboratory sections—Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, and Histopathology—where they perform diagnostic testing, specimen handling, and case analysis under the supervision of licensed medical technologists. They also attend hospital-based seminars and sessions on infection control, quality assurance, and professional conduct.

“Our internship at NMMC made us realize how vital accuracy and compassion are in saving lives,” shared one Licean intern. “It’s where we truly understood what it means to serve through science.”

The program contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by equipping future medical technologists to support accurate diagnosis and patient care. It also supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) through hands-on, outcomes-based learning, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through its sustained collaboration with a government hospital.

Through digital logbooks, reflective learning, and hospital-based research, the initiative continues to strengthen Liceo U’s commitment to developing competent, compassionate professionals who advance healthcare and community well-being.

Community Health in Action: CMLS Promotes Wellness in Barangay Macasandig

Liceo de Cagayan University’s College of Medical Laboratory Science (CMLS), through its Community and Public Health Program, strengthened its commitment to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by bringing preventive health services and education directly to the people of Barangay Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City.

Conducted over two phases on December 2 and 9, 2023, the initiative began with a Needs Assessment Interview involving selected residents. The results guided the design of the Culmination Program, which featured free blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol and blood sugar testing, flu vaccinations, and health education sessions focused on nutrition, hygiene, and lifestyle modification.

The activity, conducted in partnership with the Department of Health – Northern Mindanao and Barangay Macasandig, allowed students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world health promotion. It also strengthened collaboration between the University and local health sectors toward preventive and inclusive community healthcare.

“After the students visited our homes and taught us about healthy food and exercise, I became more aware of checking my blood pressure regularly,” shared one Barangay Macasandig resident during the event.

Through this initiative, CMLS not only delivered essential services but also fostered health literacy and community empowerment — demonstrating how education and partnership can improve lives.

“By combining assessment and action, we ensure our outreach is relevant, responsive, and truly community-centered,” said a CMLS faculty member, reflecting on the program’s success.

The project stands as a model for sustainable university-community collaboration — one that merges research, compassion, and action in pursuit of healthier, more informed communities.
